Time: same day, 9:30 PM
Rahul had dropped the three of us off at Kailashnagar. Yash offered to walk us home and then catch a bus back. I wasn’t complaining—this meant a little me-time with Yash.
As we reached Priya’s house, Yash said “Meera can I have a word with you?”
Priya caught on instantly. “Okay, I’ll leave you guys to it. Thanks, Yash, for today—it was actually fun.”
“Likewise and by the way Priya, you are a rockstar” he called out
She laughed, waved, and disappeared inside.
Yash then turned to me, “So Meera, howwww serious are you about Priya?”
“Oh, not again!” I groaned, stamping my foot.
“Relax, I was just messing with you. I know you’re straight” His grin was pure mischief.
“How exactly?” I shot back, half-indignant.
“Well, wasn’t it obvious the first day we met? C’mon you could stare at a guy like that only if you were straight. And then there were...other vibes”
I wasn’t sure whether to be embarrassed at being so transparent, or relieved.
“So you are saying you knew all this time, and you didn’t mind” I asked.
“Why would I mind?” he asked feeling a bit caught off guard.
“Well, you know I am not really your type” I said cautiously.
“And what type would that be?” he asked, a flicker of irritation in his tone at my presumptuousness.
“Well, you know the Lena, Miara kind?” I said
“Oh, so I’m shallow now?” he smirked. “Truth is, I’m selfish.”
“Meaning?” I asked
“I like to have it all - the looks, the grey cells” he said with a wink
“And I…. have that?” I asked, unsure
“Can you stop second guessing yourself? What more does a guy have to do—stand up for you, help you and your bestie out, walk you home? Oh wait—I already did all that.” He rattled it out in one breath, half-exasperated, half-laughing.
I stayed quiet.
“Ok, can I tell you one more secret” he asked
“Go on” I said
“You know that trigonometry problem the other day? I solved it in three minutes. Pretended to brainstorm so I could spend more time with you.”
I wasn’t sure if I should be feeling jealous for being unable to solve the problem quicker than him or excited for his open declaration of feelings for me. Oh well, trigonometry can suck it.
“Alright now that I have declared my feelings, what will it take for me to get, you know…” he stopped deliberately not wanting to finish the sentence
“A kiss?” I teased.
“I mean is it only dares, girls or janitor’s closets that excite you?” he teased back.
“Maybe”, I retorted
“At the risk of sounding like a prude,” he said with mock seriousness, “I’d like to be the man in this relationship.” Then he leaned in and kissed me.
Wow. Turns out books don’t lie—you really do go wobbly at the knees, half melting away, half floating.
“Ok, that was good” he said as he slowly pulled back
“Yes very good, very very good, top class” I babbled, utterly useless against hormones.
“Goodnight then and see you tomorrow” Yash flashed me a grin and started walking away.
I waved goodbye, practically bouncing as I headed towards Priya’s. (Who, by the way, had sneak-peeked the entire thing from her window.)
Priya was probably right—there was a chaos theory effect to all of this after all. My yellow skirt had, in its own way, led us here.”
