Ten months have passed, and a lot has changed. Let me take you through it, in the order it all unfolded.
Two weeks after that adventurous night, a postcard arrived at our school. It was addressed to the four of us. The picture was ordinary—just a cluster of palm trees and dates—but the message on the back made us burst out laughing: “Chips business doing great.” No prizes for guessing who sent that.
Then came the big shocker—Panchimda won a lottery. He still continues to work at the school though. He bought a massive TV for his village school so everyone there can watch Pushpak’s matches in full glory. He even set up a sports fund for young local talent. By the way he sports a Rolex watch on his wrist nowadays.
The boards went by smoothly, and Yash and I are vying for the top rank. I can see a couple of ego issues springing up in the distant future. Nah, just kidding, Yash has no problems losing to me.
Rahul’s dad, Brijraj Patel, made headlines when he finally inaugurated the long-pending new wings of Sunrise Hospital. The 9th and 10th floors were completed with his generous contributions. Priya’s uncle Mr. Pandey (so he wasn’t a fictitious character after all) who had recently got promoted as Assistant Commissioner, was also a chief guest at the function. We all were invited to the inauguration. There was a rather bizarre scene though—Rahul’s father and sister were spotted chasing after a pregnant woman, loudly insisting she was only pretending. Her husband (a very, very short man) didn’t take kindly to the accusation, and in all the commotion the poor woman actually went into early labour. In the end, tempers cooled when Rahul’s father agreed to cover all the hospital expenses.
The last we heard Miara and her father had shifted base to the Cayman Islands. It seems he found the location more ideal for business.
As for Lena—she’s never been quite the same since that freak accident with the sixer. She’s sworn off cricket for life (who can blame her?) and the doctor suspects some grey-cell damage. Word is, she’s trying her hand at modelling now.
And me? Well, I couldn’t be happier. Yash and I are so in love —we have had eight dates and ten fights so far but all is good.
Next week is the big one: Rahul’s sister’s wedding to none other than cricket’s new superstar, Pushpak. A three-day extravaganza, with celebrities lined up to attend. The grapevine says Rahul Dravid himself will be there. Yes, I know he’s married with a family—but a girl can dream, can’t she?! (Hands off Yash — I’m not cutting that out. Creative liberties, remember?)
